Glasgow Doors Open Day

Glasgow Doors Open Day

We’re full of good recommendations for seeing the secrets of the city, but we reckon this is one of our best tips yet. The Glasgow Doors Open day is literally your key to Glasgow’s hidden history. The heritage and cultural festival sees events happening throughout Scotland and it hits our streets on September 10th for seven days of uncovering mysteries.

Organised by the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, the Doors Open started as a weekend event but rapidly expanded its offering to meet visitor demand. Now, you can enjoy a week of walks, guided tours and talks, most of which won’t cost you a penny. The main draw is seeing the inside of buildings not usually accessible for members of the public, so it’s perfect for all you nosy-parkers! Theatres, museum stores, artist studios and even breweries have all been on the programme in previous years – they’ve proved a hit, too, with over 18,000 visitors heading to at least one event in 2017.

Glasgow Doors Open Day Acorn Hotel Glasgow

2018’s full line-up is still strictly hush-hush, but the organisers have been posting sneak peaks on social media, so we know that Trinity House – a to-die-for West End private residence – is on the bill. Take a trip through the palm-lined entrance hall and up to the landmark tower for spectacular views, to see how the other half lives. Also on the our to-do list is Glasgow Central Mosque. The imposing building was the first purpose-built mosque in the city and combines traditional red sandstone with Islamic architecture influences – definitely worth checking out! For something a little different, head to Maggie’s centre. Designed by prize-winning designer Rem Koolhaas, Maggie’s provides emotional and social support to those living with cancer. It’s an honour to be able to walk the peaceful paths of the epicenter of this hugely worthwhile cause.

Of course, you’ll need somewhere to call home while you’re acting the intrepid, city explorer. Might be we recommend a certain quality, 3-star residence? We’d be silly not to! The Acorn Hotel is perfect for all your needs – comfortable beds, a fantastically filling breakfast each morning, and the best location in town. You’ll be nestled between the bustling city centre and the cultural hub-bub of the West End, close to many of the scheduled events during Doors Open week.
